Embarking on the MCAT journey is no small feat. At WozPrep, we understand that the path to medical school is as unique as each student. Our mission is to provide personalized guidance tailored to your individual needs. Let's delve into the best materials and strategies for effective MCAT content review.

General Advice on Content Review

Before diving into specific resources, it's crucial to approach content review with the right mindset:

  • Familiarization Over Memorization: The goal isn't to memorize every detail but to understand overarching concepts. This foundation will serve you well during practice questions and exams.
  • Limit Note-Taking: Resist the urge to transcribe information. Instead, focus on active engagement with the material.
  • Prioritize Practice: Transition to practice questions as soon as possible. Use missed questions to identify and review weak areas.

Khan Academy: A Visual Learner's Paradise

In my own MCAT preparation, I initially turned to Kaplan books. However, I soon discovered the unparalleled value of Khan Academy. I wish I had started there from the beginning.

Why Khan Academy?

  • Visual Learning: Their videos, enriched with diagrams and animations, cater to visual learners.
  • Official Collaboration: Developed in partnership with the AAMC, ensuring alignment with test content.
  • Cost-Effective: Completely free, making it accessible to all students.
  • Interactive Practice: Short quizzes accompany each section, allowing you to assess your understanding before diving deeper.

Note: Khan Academy's MCAT course will remain available until 2026, thanks to continued support from the AAMC. They've also updated over 80 passages in the Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section to enhance your study experience.

Kaplan: Comprehensive Reading Material

For those who prefer structured reading, the Kaplan MCAT Complete 7-Book Subject Review 2025-2026 is a solid choice.

Highlights:

  • Structured Content: Each chapter begins with a quiz to assess prior knowledge and ends with practice passages.
  • Visual Aids: Full-color illustrations, charts, and diagrams simplify complex topics.
  • Practice Tests: Includes three full-length online practice exams.
  • Expert Insights: Authored by seasoned instructors, providing strategic test-taking tips.

Note: While Kaplan's practice tests are rigorous, they may yield lower scores than the actual MCAT. Use them as a tool for learning rather than a predictor of your final score.

Princeton Review: Another Reading Option

The Princeton Review MCAT Subject Review Complete Box Set offers another comprehensive reading resource.

Features:

  • Seven Subject Guides: Covers all MCAT sections, from biology to CARS.
  • Practice Questions: Thousands of end-of-chapter questions and practice passages.
  • Visual Learning: Full-color illustrations and diagrams enhance understanding.
  • Online Resources: Access to three full-length online practice tests.

Note: Similar to Kaplan, Princeton Review's practice tests can be more challenging than the actual exam. Use them to identify areas for improvement.

Jack Westin: Free Reading Resource

Jack Westin offers a free content review platform, particularly beneficial for those who prefer reading but are budget-conscious.

Pros:

  • Cost-Free: Access to a range of MCAT topics without any financial commitment.
  • Searchable Content: Easily find information on specific topics by searching "[MCAT CONCEPT] Jack Westin" on Google.

Cons:

  • Less Structured: The content may not follow a cohesive structure, requiring users to create their own study plan.
  • Depth of Content: Some topics may lack the depth found in other resources.

Anki: A Supplemental Tool

Anki is a powerful flashcard tool that should complement your content review, not replace it.

Usage Tips:

  • Premade Decks: Utilize decks like MileDown to drill high-yield content. For more, see our article on premade decks.
  • Custom Cards: Creating your own cards can reinforce learning, especially when reviewing practice questions.

Note: While Anki is invaluable for retention, it should be used alongside other study methods for comprehensive preparation.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right content review materials is a personal decision. At WozPrep, we recognize that each student's journey is unique. While Khan Academy stood out for me and many of my students, it's essential to find what works best for you.
